Step 1 - FREE consultation

Step 2 - Pre Operative LASIK Evaluation
Not everyone is a candidate for the LASIK procedure but there are millions nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatic people that could be potential candidates. Determining your candidacy is the crucial step to your path for better vision. If you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery the chances of success will be excellent. If you are not a candidate, our medical directors will explain the reasons and potentially suggest a different vision correction procedure if one applies to your specific visual case. The reason that this pre-operative exam is so important is that no two eyes are the same. No two cornea maps are the same just like with a Fingerprint or DNA sample. This is why a pre-operative exam is absolutely necessary. Before LASIK is performed you will be required to undergo a series of diagnostic tests to determine the stability of your vision. After a thorough evaluation of your cornea, the doctors will be able to determine if you are a candidate.
 
Basic LASIK candidacy requirements:

    • Must be over 18 years of age
    • Must have stable vision prescription
    • Must have track record of healthy eyes
    • Must not have keratoconus
    • Must not have severe dry eye syndrome
    • Must not be pregnant with a baby
    • Must pass corneal thickness tests

Step 3 - Day of LASIK Surgery
On the day of surgery you will be escorted into the laser room and you will be positioned under the laser microscope. After a thorough cleaning process near your eyes and eyelids the surgeon will be ready to start. First a lid speculum will be placed on top of your eye to hold the eyelids back during surgery. Anesthetic drops will be applied and the surgeon will prepare for the flap making process. The doctors will use a mechanical microkeratome to precisely make the LASIK flap. After the flap is created it will be lifted back. Next, the excimer laser will be applied with the correct parameters necessary to correct your vision. The flap will then be repositioned to its normal spot and drops are applied. Once this surgery has been completed you will be escorted out of the LASIK suite and into a resting place to await surgical review and post-operative instructions. You will begin to notice you can see although the vision will not be perfect at this point.

Step 4 – LASIK Post Operative Care
After your LASIK eye surgery we suggest that you go home and go to sleep. When you are asleep your body goes into a healing mode. You should not drive a car, operate machinery, or attempt stairs immediately following surgery. You will be given an eye shield to protect your eyes. Please wear the shields for the first nights after surgery and the following two nights at bedtime to prevent you from rubbing your eyes while sleeping.

The corneal "flap" is not sutured or glued down. It will adhere by itself over the course of one to two weeks. Therefore, it is very important that you do not rub the eye vigorously or go swimming during this period. You can wipe the eye with a tissue or washcloth, but gently please. If you know that you will have a tough time keeping your hands away from your eyes, or are a rough sleeper, we can provide you with temporary eye shields.
